Hayley is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, and educator. Raised on Wiradjuri land in Orange, she lives and works on Gadigal land in Newtown, Sydney. She holds a BA in Fine Arts from UNSW Art & Design (formerly COFA) and a BA in Interior and Spatial Design with First-Class Honours from UTS. Following her studies, Hayley co-founded Smith and Carmody, a multidisciplinary design partnership, contributing to projects such as Cornersmith and Brickfields. Her artistic and design practice is rooted in materiality and explores creative inquiry and design innovation through a research-led approach. This approach informs her ceramics practice, encompassing wheel throwing and hand-building. From 2014 to 2020, she served as a ceramics technician and tutor at Pine Street Creative Arts Centre, returning in 2022. Presently, Hayley works as a ceramics technician and teacher at Hazelhurst Art Centre and conducts workshops from her home studio, Wells Street Studio in Newtown, where she develops exhibition pieces and domestic wares while offering various classes. Committed to cultivating dynamic, collaborative learning environments, Hayley advocates for a studio-based pedagogy that prioritises critical discourse and technical mastery, informed by a decade of teaching experience. This pedagogical approach directly informs her practice, positioning the studio as a crucial material research and experimental design site.
